Louis E. Shoch
Lou Shoch received a B.A in Political Science from Johns Hopkins University in 1996, and a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1999.
After law school, Lou became a litigation associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Los Angeles where he worked from 1999 until 2007. There, Lou represented some of the world’s largest energy, health care, technology and other Fortune 500 companies in complex commercial litigation. Among other matters, Lou played a key role in the successful defense of antitrust claims against a San Diego-based, Fortune 500 energy company, in which the plaintiffs sought several billion dollars in damages.
In 2007, Lou formed Maier Shoch LLP. At Maier Shoch, Lou has continued to represent multi-national defendants in multi-million-dollar antitrust and energy matters. In addition, Lou has provided his litigation expertise to growing technology companies, healthcare companies, and other small and medium-sized companies involved in disputes over intellectual property rights, fiduciary obligations, creditors’ rights, insurer obligations, energy regulation, and contractual obligations. Among many other matters that Lou has been involved with since 2007, he has handled the following representative cases:
- Co-Counsel for Canadian energy company and its U.S. affiliate in an antitrust case in which the plaintiffs claimed that the energy companies were involved in an industry-wide conspiracy to manipulate the price of natural gas used to power electricity plants, causing the California energy crisis earlier in the decade.
- Lead Counsel for Los Angeles based film company in defense of claims by competitor for misappropriation of trade secrets and unfair competition. Successfully negotiated a settlement in which all claims against client were dismissed, and client was not required to provide any compensation to competitor making the claims.
- Lead Counsel for the then-former owners of a baler and compactor company, who had sold the entire business but did not receive the promised consideration from the buyers. Engineered the repossession of all of the equipment, inventory, machinery, and other property involved in the contract and restored former owners to control of the company.
- Co-Counsel for software company in defense of lawsuit initiated by competing software firm for misappropriation of trade secrets and unfair competition. Successfully defeated plaintiff’s application for preliminary injunction, resulting in a favorable settlement.
Lou is admitted to practice in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal, every federal district court in California, and all courts in the State of California.
